I'm not in doubles yet but will be hopefully inside of a year. I keep hearing that I will not need any additional weight. However, when I think about it, the math doesn't seem to add up to me.

Right now I predominately dive X7 100s. These are -2.5lbs empty. I dive a dry suit, ss bp/w w/ a weighted sta. This puts 12lbs on my back plus the tank at empty = -14.5lbs. I put 10lbs of weight on a weightbelt for a total of = -24.5lbs in a drysuit with 300g undergarments.

I plan to double up steel x7 100s. That's -5lbs. I would have to take my sta out so the bp/w would be -6 = -11lbs so far. The manifolds and bands are -5ish lbs right? So now

I'm at -16lbs.

The extra reg is roughly -2lbs = -18lbs

So... I would still need about 6lbs of weight somewhere.

Am I missing something?

No, you aren't missing anything.

I'm using a total of 31 lbs of ballast with a steel 95, and 24 with my double 85s. Most people I know drop 6 to 8 lbs when they go to doubles. But in very cold water, you're not going down to no weight.

I can dive Al80 doubles in fresh water with a 5 mil suit with no additional weight, but I'd be a little light at 500 psi.

For singles I use Tobin's weightplates and a weight belt. For doubles, I use a plate (no weightplates) and the same belt, so 8# less with the doubles. The weightplates are nice as it means I don't have to screw around with the belt.

I hear ya, I'm about the same... been looking everywhere for a V-weight to counter this problem as I can't stand weightbelts

I once hated weightbelts too. However at the insistance of my tech. instructor I began to use one. Now I love it. But in addition, I do also use a V weight.

Have fun...

I dive double x7-100's with a SS BP, a 19cf pony and no additional weight in fresh water (with a drysuit). In salt water, I add about 4 lbs using ankle weights for trim. I also have Jetfins, which are negative, so that helps. My last salt water dive, my wing was empty at my last deco stop, so I couldn't add much air to my drysuit for the last 10 minutes or so.

Doubles PLUS a pony?

Do you wear belt PLUS suspenders?

:shocked2:

I never use additional weight with steel doubles other than my 72's. That requires 4 additional lbs. With double 85's and my heaviest undergarment- pinnacle merino I do not need any additional weight. With a steel 95 and the same suit set up I need 8lbs on the belt. If using an al80 and drysuit on go the weight plates and an extra 4 lbs.
