Thanks for all the replies. It seems there is no set way to do it but instead it is left to personal preference. I guess the only real factor is having two tanks and a way to breathe off of them.
BTW, thanks Paladin. I am eager to try out the setup we discussed.
 
How about all the other stuff? Pressure gauge off of one 1st stage and the inflator hose (wing) off the other? Then the dry suit inflator hose.

For manifolded doubles, the primary reg is typically on the long hose on the right side, along with the inflator hose. The secondary reg, dry suit inflation, and SPG come off the left post. The logic underlying this is driven by the fact that bumping into an overhead while going forward can roll the right side valve further open, but rolls the left side shut. If you're sharing gas in a single file exit, the OOA diver is in front, on the long hose. If that hose was on the left post, which was then rolled shut after contact with the ceiling, the OOA diver would have his gas shut off and be unable to fix it, or possibly even signal. If the same thing happens to the donating diver breathing off the left post, she just reaches back and turns it on again. You occasionally see the wing inflator and drysuit hoses reversed from the above. The SPG is on the left mainly to keep it out of the way of the long hose, and to keep the right hand free for donating gas, or running a scooter.
