How is the diving in Playa Carmen? To what does it compare?

What dive operation do I use?

Thanks

Hey Fred,
The diving in Playa is great! We have some fantastic ocean reefs (very different from Cozumel, but awesome in their own right), we have the cenotes (my favourites), and then there is Coz just across the pond... if you want, shoot me an email to info@beyonddivingscuba.com and we can set you up with some great dives!

I haven't found the diving off Playa, Cancun or Akumal to be good. Lot's of dead reef, algae from pollution run off and few large fish from over fishing. If I was in Playa and wanted to ocean dive, I would contact a good op on Coz and grab the ferry. That said, the cenotes are something to check out if you think you might like that environment. Some like them and some don't. You need to judge for yourself.

You know, I would have said what Paradise Hunter said, after my first dive off Akumal. But last year, we did several ocean dives off Puerto Aventuras, and my experience was completely different. The reefs were lush and colorful and really lovely. I don't know what the sites off Playa are like, because I have not dived there, but just a bit further south, they are very good diving.

Are you asking solely about Playa del Carmen, and that is your chosen destination; or are you looking for information on diving off the mainland of the Yucatan? If you are still open to destination, I second the recommendation about Puerto Aventuras. We have been diving on Cozumel for years, Playa del Carmen a couple of times, and Puerto Aventuras at least once a year for the past six or seven. As previously noted, the reefs are alive, the fish populations are plentiful, and the diving is easy. We can't wait to get back this December to see our friends at Dive Aventuras.

Good to know. Nice to have a good option for ocean diving off the mainland. Except for the cenotes, I had pretty much given up on it.

What is the drive distance or time to Puerto Aventuras? Is it a difficult drive? We are staying in Playa Del Carmen, hence my O.P. about diving there.

Thanks

It's about 24 km (15 miles), but if you are definitely staying in PDC, might not be worth it. I guess it wasn't clear from your original post. Sorry about the confusion.

The ocean diving isn't the best. You can do reef dives anywhere but only dive the cenotes here. I highly recommend Nicolas from CenoteXperience Nico is a great guy and excellent dive guide. He gets great reviews here and on T/A.
