"I got to witness various "Schmoldty's" several times. "

I just wanted to know how various and to what level.

Why the constant slams against the Seeker? If I remember right, you said you have never been out on them. I know you have quoted their "history" but this is appearing to be almost a personal vendetta. Has Dan done something to you personally?

Just poking fun at them and their non-acceptance of GUE c-cards. I don't have anything against them and you are right, I have never been out with them.

[a poignant closing to an unfortunate event -- mg]

Hello All,
Lest everyone think that I am down on Bill Schmoldt based on my last e-mail on the subject, let me assure you once again that he was a great friend, but just did not belong on deep wrecks. What I am down on is his diving of these deep wrecks, after many of his friends told him (and Zero) that he did not belong there. Some of these same friends came to pay their last respects.

I went to his funeral yesterday, and it was a very beautiful service. It was a packed, standing-room only crowd, and included some well-known people in wreck diving and also some people that I hadn't seen in a long time. It also pained me to see my friend lying dead in the casket, the happy, easy-going,
laid-back expression that I always saw on his face replaced by one of strain, despite the fact that the funeral home personnel probably worked on that. Unfortunately, he died a very painful, horrible death.

Despite the fact that I (and many others) feel that he did not have the discipline or the "right head" to dive the deep stuff, he was very enthusiastic, and the presentations that he gave to various dive clubs on shipwrecks, maritime history, and his Canadian diving adventures were informative and entertaining. He was very smart and knowledgeable. I also had a lot of fun on many trips with him to shallow wrecks (those on which nothing
happened). And he was always a great help around the boat.

Zero said in the article that someone posted that he was the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. Well, I can confirm that he really was that kind of guy.

Rest in peace, Bill.....

I dove with them last weekend and I have to say that they were great. The crew was very helpfull and stressed safety at every turn. I'm not a GUE diver so the C-card thing wasn't a big deal, but I would dive with them again in a heartbeat.

That link to Bill's bio shows a pic of him and his snorkel is on the right side?

Wonder why he was banned from so many boats. :/

Some claim it's political. GI has not said nice things about NE wreck divers. Some who have refused to accept the cards have stated that it's a liability issue because GUE is not a recognized training agency or something to do with insurance anyway. I don't know what constitutes being a recognized agency. I do know that NACD and NSS-CDS do recognize GUE cave training even thoug GUE "members" don't speek highly of them. All kinds of people have started their own agencies. Hal Watts is one example. There must be fifty (maybe an exageration) different agencies that most have never heard of in Fl. alone.

Here's an interesting (third party hearsay printed hear only for the purpose of entertaining conversation)

A freind of mine was in FL finishing his NACD cave training. He had the oportunity to talk with a GUE instructor who was conducting a class (don't know who). My freinds cave instructor is also my former instructor and is not only an experienced cave diver but an explorer whos name appears on the list of survey team member on maps of some of the most popular cave diving sites. We chose him, not the agency. Anyway, this GUE instructor told my freind that he should take a GUE class after his NACD class because NACD training would get him killed. Keep in mind that JJ and other GUE members are active NACD and/or NSS instructors also. Later my bud was surfing the net and found a written account of a GUE cave class. Part of his account was an account of students hitting bottom and placing permenant imprints of body parts in the silt. Nothing like this ever happened in any of our NACD classes. Any cave diver knows the implications of this. My buddie is strongly and permenantly turned off of GUE. I have a lot of respect for JJ and I think GUE has much to offer. However, some of the GUE members should stop picking fights.
