I've seen this before, either on here or Dive Buddy. And your concerns are the same ones I noticed then as well.

With all the "homemade" under water breathing devices you see posted on you tube and other sites where people didn't die or otherwise suffer ill effects, you have to wonder how many we don't hear about that weren't as successful.

At least he has some concept of CO2 buildup. Even if he does ignore it.
One little trip, or even tipping the head too much and it is game over.
Darwin lost his chance on this one, but I bet he will have plenty more chances later on.

Looks like sufficient airflow... ours as kids was with bellows topside... And a better fit bucket so less dead air space. No issues provided you could drop the weights and not hold your breath on ascent if things went sideways.

At least he had a safety diver on hand.

My ex Father-in-law told me he used to do this with a WWII gas mask and a bicycle pump. He said it worked and you could tell when it was time to surface. When the pumper got tired the water level rose in the mask.

Our design was a double action hand pump for an inflatable boat with a garden hose taped into a snorkel with a purge valve. Worked great. Good air flow and no Co2 buildup.

You couldn't go very deep though or else the guy on top couldn't pump.
