My dad was sitting next to the Director of the Cozumel promotion board on a flight on Delta in the states, and he said during times of hurricanes they either used to or currently put the dolphins from Chankanaab in the pool after converting it to saltwater......anyone heard of this? That is why there is a statue of dolphins out front and in the lobby. Sounds kinda cool. I would like to see a picture of that if it's true.

I guess it is true, I found this picture and article..

Harry Greenstreet of Dixon, California, got a memorable trip of his own in Cozumel, Mexico. He was in Mexico for a scuba diving challenge when Dean was approaching. At his hotel, he saw dolphins being transferred to the pool from Dolphin Discovery Cozumel, a facility where people can see marine life including dolphins. Greenstreet said the dolphin park is right on the water, so the trainers put them in the hotel pool to keep them safe during the hurricane. He saw about 20 dolphins total in the pool and said hotel guests' cameras were out to capture the spectacle.

"The trainers took excellent care and stayed with the dolphins during the storm," Greenstreet said.

yeah you know chlorinated water is just great for the dolphin.

after they convert it to saltwater? Yeh, ok.

This is a very controversial topic, and there have been many discussions on this over the years., so it's nothing new. Since you think it's so cool, you might want to do a search to see how many dolphins have perished over the years from this practice.

Let's just say that I don't think it's "cool" at all. That's all I'm going to say...I get way too emotional about this topic.

I was stuck in Cozumel during Hurricane Wilma, staying at the Hotel Cozumel. They put 17 dolphins in the pool the day before the hurricane struck the island. They all survived, which probably would not have been the case if they hadn't been relocated. I'm sure it wasn't good for them, but better than being stranded or killed somewhere else... I was very impressed with the level of devotion to the dophins by their trainers.

Now, the ethics of keeping dolphins to begin with is another topic...

edit- they don't convert the pool to salt, but they stop adding chlorine

I agree keeping dolphins out of their natural habitat just isn't right but it is (cool) to see them do this to try and save the dolphins.

Cool they try to save dolphins from dying, yes. Please provide a link to the number of dolphins that have died over the years from being put in this pool......cannot find it doing a google search and would love to read it.:)

That wasn't meant to be literal...you won't find a link where they advertise that dolphins have died, but in fact several have....it's kept veryquiet when it happens.

My whole objection is that they shouldn't be in captivity in the first place....then they wouldn't have to worry about moving them to a chlorinated pool. Even though they were raised in captivity, IMO, they would have a better chance at surviving by being let loose in times of emergency...at least they would be in their natural environment.

I agree but then they would probably not come back and they wouldn't want that...no more $$$.:D
