I plan on buying used unless I find a great deal on new, but I have been doing well so far on eBay almost have all my gear for under $500.00 I'm more interested in how the regulators work I was the kid that took everything apart to see how it worked, by age 12 I rebuilding car engines. I fix almost anything now home AC, refrigerators, so this will probably be the same. I find I can buy good equipment used I can save money. I have been told by shops, and instructors that I should never buy used, but isn't renting just using used equipment. Not like I'm not going to have it serviced before I used it. The rental equipment looked like it hadn't been serviced much.

It would be silly to save $$$ buying used only to spend that $$ paying your LDS to service those regs. Any LDS so set against used gear is much more interested in its own well being than its customers' so I'd be hesitant to trust their work, especially on gear they advised against. If you can rebuild an engine, rebuilding a regulator will be a piece of cake once you find a source for parts. Good luck.

+1
Buying used = DIY service
Thanks to the resident gurus on this board, I'll never buy new regs again.
There's an initial investment in books and tools, a hundred bucks or two depending on what you already have. For the 4 of us, the return on investment is 1 year.

It would be nice to be able to read the results of the two lifetimes theory. Maybe really thick glasses or a LOUD audio cassette.

I have a sh Mk 20 D400 for sale PERFECT.

What tools?

But only Zeagle and DiveRite will actually sell "openly" with Edge/Hog I believe you have a hoop or two to jump through first.

Not true!

I bought my HOG regs from Dive right in Scuba and bought 2 sets each of 1st and 2nd stage rebuild kits at the same time!

I service my own regs, though I have been trained too :)

Sherwood regs are uber easy to service yourself, with a minimal amount of tools. Parts kits can be bought online for cheap! The 2 most important tools are common sense and an ip gauge.

Times are tough I don't blame them not like I haven't spent $1000 already just to buy fins, mask, snorkel, 3mm suit, and a few other odds and ends for 2 people at my LDS. I doubt you could find a shop that would tell you to go buy used and service the reg yourself.

And that is the problem with LDSs that every diver should be aware of.
