Not to hijack the thread, but I feel compelled to respond

Vayu and snowbear:

Since I brought the koolaid joke up I feel responsible to answer to you or anyone offended by it.

1) It wasn't intended to offend anyone.
2) It wasn't meant to discourage anyone from pursuing the DIR philosophy
3) If in any way someone felt offended by my joke, I apologise to you

I do find some DIR practices good and I've adopted some that fit my dive style, but the greatest threat to the DIR philosophy is their strict way of thinking, no room for disagreement, IMO is like going to the ARMY, do as I say and never question anything.
While I may agree and use many DIR postulates, I think it's better fitted for the type of extreme diving it was created for, and it's not practical for average recreational divers.
I don't want to tell anyone to go DIR or not, IMO it's a personal choice, but we're not in in the DIR forum and I would never go to the DIR forum and post anything against DIR, not even the koolaid joke.

So please chill out and enjoy the ride, no offense was meant by it and the joke is here to stay no matter what you or me think about it, it's like the BWOD name, it's going to stay no matter what you or me think about it.

To the original poster, I would recomend that for very accurate DIR info, post a similar question in the DIR forum and I bet that the good folks there will answer all his questions and direct you to to the best info about the DIR philosophy and specific brand choices including costs and why the choice was made, good luck, hope you like it.

Of course it wasn't.... jokes never are intended to offend or hurt anyone ;)
For the record, I'm not offended... just pointing out that just 'cause you don't *intend* to offend, doesn't mean no-one's going to take exception to your "joke"

Actually, if you ever take a DIR class, you will find how incorrect you are.... questioning everything is encouraged. I took full advantage of this when I took my classes.... it was like a little kid who keeps asking, 'why? why? why? why?' :D

Those few folks on the internet who are rigid in their thinking are not representative of the whole 'philosophy'.

Again, until you have actually tried it, you are not qualified to judge this. I have found most of the principles of DIR to be completely applicable (or as you said, practical) to the 'average recreational dives' I do... that includes cold, green water as well as dives in warm blue water.

Yes it is. But the chilling out could be applied to your end of cyberspace as well ;)
For the record (again) I for one am enjoying the ride. If I wasn't, I would have logged off. There's no point in being here if there's no enjoyment.
I actually appreciate that you have opened the door for my response here... Thank you :D

Not everything you read in the DIR forum is "accurate DIR info." You will also be hard-pressed to find DIR specific brand choices... there are none. Individuals on the other hand, have specific brand choices they prefer, and most of those individuals are more than happy to tell you what those choices are and why they were made :D

Dilute the koolaid a bit, and you should be Ok :D j/k

I may be wrong on some things, but I respect the DIR guys for sure.eyebrow

OMG...When did that happen?

Snowbear:
Actually... I have never liked kool aid. Since actually drinking it is not a requirement, I'll just kill the grass with it if someone ever offers it to me :D

But then Again Snowbear You're actualy DIR, and not a member of the all black cult of the koolaid DIRFers.

In my experience, she's actually a DIVER ... one of the better ones I've ever dived with, in fact.

I've always found it odd that those who complain the loudest about "the cult" use the exact same tactics to put down those they perceive as members. It's such a waste of energy ...

And FWIW - when I graduated Fundamentals, one of my DIR-trained friends presented me with a package of Kool-Aid (grape flavor). It's still in my pantry, awaiting another friend's "graduation ceremony" ... ;)

I drink Koolaid, Caprisun and my favorite is Fruit Punch Gatorade, since I quit drinking alcohol 8yrs ago, my drug now is the Gatorade and oatmeal cookies when diving.

I may drink one or 2 alcoholic drinks at a party, but I can't see myself drunk again as we use to be in college, I like to be clear to be able to think by myself and not fall for peer presure.eyebrow
