Please let us not confuse the meaning of 'stroke'. While it does have meaning in the diving world, it does not only apply here. 'Stroke' can you apply to any individual in just about anything as deemed fit by his/her peers, sometimes those peers don't even know the person.

As another example, still in the sporting area, I grew up in a bowling family..we all bowled, mother, father, and brother. Having bowled since I was 3, I have been around plenty of strokes as well as been one.

One particular example of a stroke in bowling, is the guy who pays $179.99 for a brand new ball that hooks like no other, buys the brand new shoes, all accessories, he even has a brand name shirt on (bowling related of course),...shows up for league play the first night...walks up there and throws a dead straight ball and barely picks off the 4, 7, and 8 pins..walks back and complains the lanes are too oily!! NOW THAT MY FRIENDS, IS A STROKE!!!

That was the original definition as applied by George as well.
When he first became project director, those who were kissing his be-hind to make up for a lack of skills were the original "strokes"... as in they were simply "stroking" George to gain or maintain a position in the WKPP.

It later evolved into a term referring to divers who are unsafe, or who have an unsafe attitude.

After starting this thread I'll probably be on the secret GUE list of NTBT (Not To Be Trained) divers - I'd probably have to change my name as well!! :D
Be sure to put aluminum foil in your hat.

... and was later corrupted to infer those who are non-DIR trained.

Then it was corrupted again, this time by the rebel freedom fighters, and was meant to infer those DIR trained (Not necessarily certified) divers who still look like pig-pen but talk a damn fine game in their crisp new gear.

Last I heard it was being generally applied to sloppy divers in several circles, GUE or not. In fact, I'm thinking we can get Webster to include a new meaning for the word by 2010.

LOL !!!

Perhaps you're right. I know that GUE is changing the way the industry looks at diving ... :D

In truth, there's an entire lexicon of DIR-related terminology to be explored. We have buses, goats, poodles, wankers, and many more. Sometimes it's all so confusing ... :11ztongue

Let the smokers smoke, it cost much less in medical expenses to provide care to a cancer patient (typically dies within a year), that it takes on providing care for a normal ageing patient.
That's actually true. All this BS about smokers costing the other taxpayers money. It's the other way around - smokers pay huge amounts of tax buying tobacco supposedly to pay for the extra health care and non-smokers tend to live longer and actually need that care. If everyone gave up tomorrow the loss of tax revenue added to the extra health care that would be needed would cause huge problems in goverment finances.

I'm still waiting to see your DIR-F report Bob, your class has occured correct?

Thanks for the explanations. Some of you have been diving so long that you don't realize that you speak Scubonics. A curious language, composed of many almost obvious metaphors, abbreviations, and LOTS of acronyms. I thank all my translators for your endless patience with me. I was seriously land-locked for most of my life, and have not had exposure to your culture, but I'm still eager to learn- I like what I see. Even most of your arguments/discussions/volleys have been educational. I think. :)

So as I see it, I'm a stroke if I don my hot pink Dive Goddess skin, pulled lovingly from my HUGE new scuba bag that's in everyone's way on the boat... look at the DM after the crew has set up my gear, and say, "Do I have time to smoke a cigarette before we dive?". I wonder out loud to myself, "Now, which direction is on? Hope those guys got it right...", while gazing at what I hope is the valve...My Giant Stride is a thing of beauty- with all my danglies, losing my mask, arms flailing, I'm hopelessly skeery.

Am I learning?

Foo

P.S. I confess to doing the losing my mask thing once. And I do have a big bag.
