Unfortunately seems to be the rule, rather than the exception. Off the top of my head there are (not counting the big box stores that pretend to be dive shops) four or six LDS in/around San Diego. None of them are very good. Two of them have good people, but sell crap and don't do gas well. One has quality equipment, instruction and gas service but is so inconveniently located that I've decided to just be self sufficient. The others could burn to the ground and the diving community would be better for it. It's a shame.
Honestly, the best "shops" we have are the boats themselves which often have blending stations, boosters, quality equipment to rent, etc.
