Being in the midwest, we are all familiar with water visability that allows one to punch him/her self in the eye and never see it coming.
But, what I wonder is do these huge mud puddles get clearer when you go deeper?

You need to look at the lake composition before you dive. All the best vis lakes have rock/sand shores and bottom. These are also few and far between in the midwest. Most lakes out here are mud lakes. Mud bottoms, mud sides, and mud shores. Hence there is never a shortfall of silt to be stirred by the smallest breeze or fishes tail.
