And if so, what for? In particular, do you use scooters on shore dives -- to reach less accessible places, or just go farther out?

To go farther in -- to a cave.
To make a long surface swim to and from a descent point easier.
Just for fun.

We use them to get to places that would take a long swim just to get there, or are only accessible by boat. Most of our stuff around here is shore diving, but I also use my scooter off of a boat which allows me to see more of a particular dive site.

Scott,
After diving with Mark last weekend. I would agree, not just one, but 2! Hmm, yeah, 2 short bodies would cut it in the Monterey Bay area. Now the fun factor went up exponentially. We don't do the kind of surface swimming you guys do. Not even close!

Just a note, this is posted in the New England Lobsta Divers forum...I think Ilya was trying to find out if anyone uses them in New England.

Very few people do. They aren't very practical here....Take a Gavin, which can go 200 ft/min (2 knots). Considering that visibility is normally 10-20 ft and the scooter rides a few feet ahead of you...that gives you about 1-2 seconds between the time you see something and the time you hit it. That's all fine and good on shore dives, where there is little to hit, but put yourself on a net covered wreck and it could lead to disaster.

While there are many good uses for these contraptions, I wish people wpould NOT use them in enclosed areas like the Casino Pointn Dive Park on Catalina. I think they are fine in unrestricted areas along the coast where there won't be a concentration of divers, but I get tired of seeing them whiz out of the kelp... right into my video cameras field of view or, worse... right into me as I am filming!

I guess some folks just don't understand the concept of area-specific threads ;)

Well, I'm off to the California thread to complain about Maine lobstermen's treatment of divers.

Pretty territory-specific are we? The question may have been posted in the N.E. section, but my response was relevant to the post regardless of geography my friend. Perhaps you were having a "crabby" day, decapod diver. We always welcome posts from other regions in our SoCal section! Besides, I WAS a N.E. diver at one point in my history.
