As a DM, I always give the OK sign and I always look for it. I always remind newer divers to help them get in the habit.

Always.

Upon entering the water I always give the ok sign, in the pool with classes as well. Underwater I use it frequently in order to get a response back...for instance...to show that I will be completing the safety stop or whatever I may be doing.

The last boats i dove on, last week in Aruba, insisted on the OK sign from all divers after a giant stride. If you didn't, the divemaster yelled down to remind you.

It's my experience that I can't hear someone on the boat yelling when I'm underwater.

I do a lot of boat dives and I don't know when I last saw anyone else give the okay sign either when entering the water or after ascending back to the top. Am I the only one who does it?
On the boats that I frequent and the crowd I dive with, it is used quite frequently. Most of the boat captains request the OK in their dive briefing.

Miss Manners of the Sea says: Always on a boat dive after a giant stride and when surfacing. Afterall, it's the polite thing to do. :D

I agree you should give the OK signal (assuming you are OK) when surfacing, but after my entry, I'm underwater and am not coming up just to give an OK signal. If I wasn't OK, I wouldn't have gotten in the water.

I do unless we are instructed to enter and immediately descend. I like to do a quick buddy check on the surface before a descent so I normally return to the surface after an entry. I don't like it when my buddy gets in and descends without me, that means he's not close enough to know I'm having an issue after my entry. One dive I gave the boat the OK even though I was fighting a nasty anxiety episode and starting to hyperventilate; we were hot dropping and I don't like to do that, boat props freak me out. I was looking down at my buddy who was looking up at me waiting for me to descend, I literally told myself "You descend in the next two breaths or you get out." I got my breathing under control and joined my buddy who didn't know until after the dive that I had been on the verge of a panic attack.

Try diving with my wife then :)

I think I'll get a wetsuit with an "OK" decal on it so I'm always ok :)

And I'm making the OK phobics happy :D
