Ya, me too...... I always give the OK... after I step off the back of the boat or when I get I to the surface, and yes if I'm shore diving and there is a group I'm with on shore a simple OK lets them know whats going on....

Most of my dives were in the Carribean, and EVERY diver gives the OK signal when entering the water and even when surfacing ....

The last boats i dove on, last week in Aruba, insisted on the OK sign from all divers after a giant stride. If you didn't, the divemaster yelled down to remind you. However, these boats had a mixture of certified divers and "resort" divers, so they may have been more compulsive about making sure no one ripped their masks off or regulators out hitting the water! In the Keys, no one seemed to care, but the boats all had certified divers only. Still, I reflexively put my hands up on my head after each entry.

yep, i give an ok unless we're hot dropping, since it would be useless on the way down. yep, i give one on surfacing.

but only on boat dives, not shore or spring or quarry or whatever.

ok-ing a buddy is a different topic...

My buddies and I always give the OK sign when entering the water on boat dives.

Shore dives we all gather before going down and verbally check with each other.

Yes. When i'm diving alone (without a buddy, but in the water with other divers) ... as I pass them, I let them know that i'm ok. If we are both solo-ing (me and the diver I pass) at the moment, it's a mutual thing.

I always give it after entry and after I have reached the service. You are right about not all charters being interested. I went on three different charter boats over the past twelve months. Two captains wanted to see it and the other didn't care. But I do what is proper portocal and don't care what anyone else thinks.

Yes I use it often not that the DM's on boats always pay attention. I'll have the try the Shaka....
