What would be the purpose of using one? Stability, added weight on the backplate? Still curious since my buddy dives with this wing.
yes and yes, although the extra stability is not always needed or felt. The STA also pushed the tank further off the body which makes it easier or harder to reach the valves depending on your flexibility.

I use an STA because I feel it's more stable than without and it's easier to switch over to doubles (two wingnuts instead of unthreading the cam straps).

Use a Halcyon 27. Actually 2. With a FredT Stainless for AL80's. And a FredT ALuminum with HP100's, HP80's, LP95's, LP108's. Have a 2 piece FredT STA. Used once. Didn't need it. So now I don't use one at all.
