Great gift, but I suggest going with the SD850IS. It is a better camera for less money. Both cameras use the same image processor, but the SD790IS tries to cram 10 megapixles in, and the result is lower image quality. Unless you intend to blow up pictures to the size of a wall, 8 megapixles is more than sufficient. I think the 850 also offers slightly better optical zoom.

Yes the Canon is very nice but there is one other choice you might want to look at. The Olympus 1010 it has a 7x zoom (vs. the Canon's 5x), also 10 megapixels and is cheaper $238. ($299 at Circuit City).

More megapixles does not equal better. In fact it quite often is not as good. Any camera with at least 6 megapixles is fine except for enormous prints. Cameras that devote less memory to cramming in magapixles often take better pictures than their high megapixle counterpart.

Take for example the fujifilm finepix f30 vs. the finepix f50. The f50 has 12 mexapixles, whereas the f30 only has 6. The f30 is a recieves much better reviews. If you can still find a new f30 you will pay double what you can get an f50 for, even though the f50 is the updated model of the same camera.
