This was recovered from the Cooper River (in the area of the Cypress Gardens boat ramp). Does anyone knwo what it is / was?

I know that this is not a critter now, but it was part of one along time ago.

This was recovered from the Cooper River (in the area of the Cypress Gardens boat ramp). Does anyone know what it is / was?

extremely worn/pitted Megalon (sp?) shark tooth ?
 
It looks a lot like the upper mouth section of a turtle skull. I've got an entire hawksbill skull in my shop, but the mouth section looks very similar to what you've got. You're just look a lot older.

My guess is that it is whats left of either a Loggerhed or Hawksbill turtle beak.
Both species are indigenous to the area.
 
Actually looks like a turtle jaw. You were diving in the canal???
 
By doing a quick search on line, it does actually look more like a turtle beak/jaw...
