I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a beginner, and have a lot to learn. I don't remember hearing anything special about whistles in my OW or AOW courses.

I'd love to find out from others what kind of whistle you use, or if you use a whistle at all! Where do you feel is the best/safets place to attach it. I've seen basicly two kinds: the small flat "SOS whistle" and the larger bulkier "Storm whistle" that's supposed to be louder. Any thoughts?

Also look into the power air horn's that can be attached between your power inflator it's LP supply hose. Very Loud and can be used underwater to get attention.

For emergency's carry a plastic umpires whistle and 5" Glowstick in a BC pocket myself.

I carry a Storm whistle in my thigh pocket. The whistle has a small bolt snap attached to it so it's secured to a bungy in the thigh pocket when I don't need it but can be clipped to a chest D-ring in the (possible but unlikely) event that I need to keep the whistle handy whilst floating at the surface.

A whistle can be heard over greater distances. You can also blow a whistle for much longer the you can call for help. I have a flat one attached to my corugated hose. I also carry a safety sausage on every open water dive.

Personally, I have a Storm attached with a cable tie to my safe second holder. I used to carry the flat whistle but the Storm is a LOT LOUDER. The ones that you attach to your power inflator are loud and distinctive but I'd rather carry something that has no mechanical parts and does not require air in my tank to work.

If you get a Storm, change out the split ring for something that won't rust before you take it diving (cave line or cable tie).

Storm, attached to my SMB... (The Dive Alert <lp hose attached> is a nice idea, unless, of course, you're OOA on the surface, and had to orally inflate)...

it's always there because it's hooked to my currogated hose. no reason not to dive without it.

same here, my wife and I got lost once very early on. NEVER dove without a storm whistle and SMB EVER AGAIN! except when I'm in a Pool :D

I have a flat whistle attatched to my BC and there it stays, also dive with a SMB.

You probably find that true about a lot of good to know stuff. Keep reading and listening.

We have storm whistles on our BCs. I attached them to a right shoulder D ring with short 1/8 inch bungee cords just long enough to blow them if we ever need them. They are out of the way but handy.

Sometimes I practice blowing it underwater.
