I was swimming along in PNG with my camera, and saw an interesting encounter taking place. I discovered I would NOT make a good naturalist. A naturalist has to stand by and let nature take place without any interference. I found I couldn't do that very well.
I saw a coral polyp catch a nudi by the tail. As I watched, it started to swallow it. Just before he was swallowed down, I reached down and rescued it. BAD ME! I deprived the polyp of a good meal. Luckily, I did get some pics before I interfered.

Allison,
I must have been right behind you, because I saw a dead coral polyp -- obviously malnourished -- and a little family of coral polyps all crying next to it....bad bad girl!

Why would you stop the mutual eating society from doing its thing? I ceftainly hope you wouldn't stop me from eating a nice big juicy flank steak!

As a biologist, I have to admit there are times when I have trouble standing by and watching one critter devour another.

It can be very difficult to watch nature in action, but as they said in "The Lion King" it is the circle of life. Each of the earths critters must eat to survive.

Does the amount of trouble you have watching something get eaten depend on whether or not the one doing the devouring is big enough to eat you? :eyebrow: I don't like to interfere, all the critters have to eat and they cull the weak/stupid from the gene pool.
Ber :lilbunny:

If that is true we need more critters that feed on humans.

Having been in similar situations, I blew through my roll of Ektachrome on one incident in 1:1 extension tubes.

The photo was great, just think what a series of 20 might look like. Love your title, btw: "Nudi Lunch", made me think of Naked Lunch!

I just hope somebody is (and keeps) shooting when I get swallowed by that Whale Shark.
