Do instructors and employees get discount on scuba gear?

I would say that probably every case is different, if you are in a store where they have flexibility and inclination to off some kind of discount then your instructor card could probably help your haggle if it were coupled with some kind of argument such as you teach in the area and are happy to recommend the store to students.

It would not benefit the store if you bought kit then went elsewhere in the world, if a student saw you using for example scubapro regs and decided he wanted some then bought some but from a different store, good for scubapro but no use to the original store.

if you work in a store then it is fairly normal to get some kind of discount exactly if you worked in a clothing retailer or any other type of retail set up, depends on the boss though at the end of the day.

I have seen people on dive boats in resorts asking for discounts as they are DM/Instructor, I have never seen it work for people taht are just passing through though.
 
Like others have said, each store is different. When I worked at dive stores, I got between 10% and 25% depending on the equipment. As an independent instructor, some places will give me 10%-15%. While others do not offer any discounts.
