DIY Survival - Consolidated items, application, experiences other than gears

Since we’re on the subject elsewhere, I’ve seen individual threads but thought maybe a collection of DIY testing results in one location would be a good idea. For what you’ve tried for items other than made to dive emergency equipment or supplies (strobes, sausages etc.)
I see water surface (literally) a big challenge. It’s not like you can set something down and it stays there. Ok so you got it waterproofed, how do you keep it or multiple items serviceable once opened when surrounded by water?
Some can be real messy if they fail, lets share experiences and avoid finding it out for ourselves.
And thoughts you’ve considered ie only so much space - how you’ve weeded or determined 1 ‘item’ with multiple application.

This is just off the top of my head wondering, feel free to add more. Don’t worry about my categories i.e. addressing all the issues by item makes sense.

This general topic has pretty heavy thread retrieval. I’ve tried to help the users of the search function. Any suggestions to improve or I guess reduce the number…how about PM me edit suggestions so we keep on topic here.

Specifics

Brand names if one works and another doesn’t.

• How deep something has worked.
• How long it held up.
• Worked once – so quick and dirty short term for infrequent application or long term.

Reduce bulk


Packaging other than a bulky canister or box. (Lets not argue about them but and discuss alternatives.)

• A home vacuum sealer?
• Ziplock bags?
• Know of any type and resource for indestructible packaged survival type goods
• I have a way to vacuum seal heavy foil (Visol not kitchen foil) bags…I should try that out.

Application

• How to apply a Mylar blanket
• • how to reduce the introduction of colder fresh water seepage.
  • Poncho size for gear bulk, has a hood?
• There is only so much you can pile onto an appendage, neck or D ring before you’re a tangle. Granted, you may have all the time in the world.
  • Thin cordage or more bulky webbing.
  • Heavy so less floating off and away unnoticed when busy with another.
  • Maintain length needed to use vs will not float off
  • Add a bulky heavy clip to everything- sink
  • plastic clips - float

Escape management

• It sinks
• Or floats out of a pocket easily – rummage factor
• be sure to hang onto, risky but better in use

Sustenance

• What and how they hold up to pressure as they are packaged?
  • Marathon type concentrated nourishment pouches
  • Energy bar packaging
  • The little individual juice packs
• Water packaging
  • What kind of?
  • Flimsy store bottled with less chance of contamination over time than say a Nalgene (bigger and heavier) bottle
  • Replacement frequency

Breakage with abuse and pressure

• Consolidation Pros and Cons
  • Keep it in few packages or less
  • Convenience in the fact theoretically, you’ll never use it and be rinsing and checking every or on so many dives
  • More potential to lose one thing retrieving another
  • Damage the rest
