Don, yes, I used breadboard. That could be the issue. Since I have all components I'll try to solder all together on the perf board and try again. Thanks for the tip.
 
Nope. I just gave up and bought one on sale.
 
I gave up too... there was a timing issue and i didn't have the right tools to carry on...
