I would see European [guides] as a bug not a feature.Diving from Koh Yao Yai with Elixir Divers is very convenient and easy diving. The dive shop is very close to dive sites. Total 4 hours to make two dives trip by speedboat in small intimate groups 3-10 divers only. Well maintained equipment and European instructors.

LOL.
Expat is "bug"!!!
Close non Thai operated diver shop eg. Rumblefish(Vietnamese owned).
don’t encounter many Americans, probably lack of language ability outside of English.
I assumed your reply is for someone(#12) who said "European guide is a bug".That’s a very superficial perspective which shows a lack of understanding of the diving in Thailand.
Local guides are almost all DMs, not instructors, and for the diving operators they are more economical. Usually great critter spotters, not so great at knowing what they are in your language.
Some Europeans were born and/or grew up there, speak Thai like a local, and that is “home” for them.
Others are instructors who speak one or more European languages, and either bring their own customers on a big boat, or serve the boat’s European customers who don’t speak English that well in their own language.
Still other Europeans are guys who have married a local and have settled there.
But I also know Korean instructors serving Korean customers and Chinese instructors serving Chinese speaking customers.
There’s always an interesting story behind why they are there.
