I have an odd question I can't seem to find the answer to. I am part of a Lionfish hunting team in Curacao, and one of the side effects of being a member of this team is occasional swelling. I got stung Saturday night. I'm pretty swollen up in my left hand. I'm assuming because fluid doesn't compress that diving while swollen up won't be an issue, but thought I should check to make sure I wouldn't be risking some kind of sepsis from putting pressure on the fluid. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi CuracaoJ,

Sepsis wouldn't occur simply from compressing an edematous area. However, there is a small probability that it could evolve from an untreated local infection secondary to lionfish punctures/envenomation. If you notice excessive redness, pus/foul odor drainage and heat at the puncture site, it's time to be seen by a doctor. Sepsis is a whole-body systemic inflammatory response to infection and a very serious, often fatal, condition.

As for the edema itself, keep the affected body part elevated whenever possible; don't further constrict the area with a tight fitting wetsuit or other gear; and, attempt to keep the area cool, especially in hot environments.
