What kind of ear covers was the diver wearing? I've never seen something like that.

I'm looking for places to dive in the Philippines. How big were the frogfish? Really tiny or visible without a magnifying glass? I have aging eyes.

Ear covers are part of an IST Pro Ear Mask. See a link below. They are to keep your ears dry from water, which mimeses chances of ear infections. We like these masks. It takes time to get used to them, and they do not always work 100% as intended, but overall we like them.
Frogfish were from one centimetre to about 30 cm, with most of them in a range between 3-5 cm. I do recommend a magnifying glass. My wife always has one.

What type of magnifying glass works well underwater?

Any magnifying glass should work under water. Magnification will not be as high as claimed, but even 1.5 X or 2 X will do the work.
For several years my wife had a cheap one from Amazon. It worked well.

During the last trip the glass got lost, and we asked for the resort to order the following heavy duty from their local internet store:

Some divers had big and heavy magnifying glasses.

Hope the above is of help.

Plenty of the bigger froggies in Dauin...Commerson, Pictus, and Maculatus :wavesmiley:

Big frog fish is boring and less colourful.
Smaller comes in various colours(plain or multi).
