Ok, here's my question: What's different about this vs the normal jetpack? The article didn't really seem to say, just the implication that it's maybe more comfortable and has some kind of built in compatibility with a shearwater dive computer? Am I missing something? Because dollars to donuts, this costs $500-1000 more than the standard

Well, if you save 15lbs of theoretical weight they can sell 15 lbs of gear and a training course. And it will be for the Avelo and to use the scooter and the integration so you can see your scooter battery data integrated into the your Shearwater. And they will be able to sell you the transponders.... and spare batteries.

As I have said before, we'll all see how this works out. Seems like some expectations have already been exceeded.
Expectations in my mind have been blown away! I can’t believe they have survived this long without real consumer interest. They have deep pockets indeed.

Hi @Germie

Routine Avelo rental includes a Jetpack, 3 Hydrotanks, 2 batteries, a 300 bar DIN regulator set, and whatever weight you need. I have found that I only need a single battery for 3 dives, so only take one. I use my own regulator set with a transmitter and my Teric running the Avelo Mode.

For me, 3 tanks is enough. I do 2 dives in the morning, have a leisurely lunch, and do 1 dive in the afternoon. My dives average about 70 minutes. I have never discussed taking 4 Hydrotanks with Dive Friends, they may be able to arrange it.
Hi @Germie

I have only dived Avelo in Bonaire with Dive Friends. They have recently changed their Avelo rental policy and it made me think of you.

Avelo rental gear (without Hydrotanks) is now $55 per day. Hydrotanks have the same policy as unlimited shore diving, unlimited air or nitrox tanks for $42 per day. You are only to take 2 tanks at a time. In general, Avelo gear is to be returned by closing time of 5 pm. However, they tell me that if you inform them ahead of time that you are doing an evening or night dives, you can return your Avelo gear by 9:30 the next morning. So, Avelo rental gear is now $97 per day with unlimited Hydrotanks.

I have no idea what the rental policy looks like at any of the other Avelo Dive Centers, this is an improvement for me when in Bonaire.

I have similar thoughts. The tank seems pretty awesome but only if you can get it up to 300 bar and make a real difference in the gas you have available. If you start getting complicated with a battery and pump, why not just go closed circuit and be able to stay down all day. IMHO.
After you are Avelo Certified you can certainly fill your Avelo tank to 300 bar. That gives you as much gas a full HP Steel 100.

You would also need to adjust your weighting for the extra weight of the gas at the beginning of the dive or dive negative until breathing off the extra weight.
