Review Diving the Avelo System

To quote the miniseries chernobyl: “Not great, but not horrifying.” I was expecting total system cost to come out to 7k, so while this is still very expensive, it’s cheaper than I thought it would be. Still costs more than double all my gear combined (for now).

I do wonder how anybody drops that amount of money on the system, knowing that if the company should fail (as companies sometimes do, no matter how good the product) they’re left with 4 grand worth of gear they can’t get parts or service for anymore. I guess that’s catch-22 for you

My purpose in posting this thread was simply to supply information to those who might be interested.

I did my Avelo certification, 2 guided dives, and 3 independent dives in December 2023 in Bonaire. I did 6 more independent dives this October in Bonaire. So far, my cost has been $1030. My current plans are to do several more dives using Avelo rental gear on our yearly visits to Bonaire at $110 per day/3dives.

$3,990 for a single tank? To do 3 dives a day would be insanely expensive, for a high volume tourist spot. It so be more cost effective to give out perfect trim classes. I doubt these units are going to prevent newbs from rototilling the reef, anyway.

I can’t see how this system gives that much value to the diver or the resort. Buoyancy control isn’t that hard. If your back isn’t okay for 40lbs of gear, it won’t be okay for 30 lbs. It won’t change how animals react to you (like a CCR might). It is a battery powered BCD.

On the plus side, it's rated to 200 meters.

Then do multi hour dives where you have to wave the fish away as there’s no bubbles to disturb them. And breathe warm moist gas. And do 100m/330ft dives. And cave dives.

The silence of no bubbles. The sublime stability of your breathing not affecting buoyancy. No bubbles bringing down the roof when inside wrecks and mines. Breathing warm, moist gas that doesn’t dry your throat. Using very little gas, especially helium. Gas consumption that is not depth dependent. Massively flexible diving profiles.

This is an inappropriate analogy. Theranos was fraud. Avelo claims are generally true.

• Equipment weight is less, 15 lbs for me

For balance;

• Avelo kit is expensive; costing ~$3000 more than traditional kit
• Requires crossover and buoyancy training at additional cost
• Buoyancy isn't an issue; training is the problem
• Weight differences are overstated
• There is very little positive buoyancy available on the surface; this could be dangerous.
• The equipment is novel; other divers not immersed in the Avelo system would struggle to rescue an Avelo diver (no elephant's trunk, no inflator, little buoyancy)
• Per dive, Avelo kit would be far more expensive to rent and fill than traditional kit.
• Relies upon a battery to sink -- traditional kit would be a 2 second dump.
