As I am not familiar with that part of the world I had to ask. Liveaboards how close to the shore do they come?, Indonesia comes to mind where liveaboards were boarded.
I am not usually overcautious (read paranoid) about traveling to remote places but I must admit after the article on the BBC news I would have to think hard on this one.
As it appears to be a very large area and the government doe's not appear to have the manpower to police it anywhere satisfactory.

Actually, most of the famous reefs in Sudan are quite close to shore. You can actually see land from both Sanganeb and Sha'ab Rumi on clear days. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about pirates - I have never heard about such events in northern Sudan - or the Darfour crisis spreading to Port Sudan (it's a local conflict) is very unlikely. But if a group of people wanted to attack a liveaboard for some reason, it would be possible for them to launch from land.

I believe the reefs are far enough from shore. By far enough, I mean far enough from pirates' capabilities in this area of the world.

Thanks for your answers, Asser and Christian.

As they say: "I've no further questions at this point." :)
