Over 22 months ago, I was diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis. The diagnosis was confirmed after an ENG ear test administered by a neurologist. Well, I have been symptom free for a long time and I would very much like to get into diving. I have done some research (probably) on the net and haven't found a definitive answer or opinion on my suitability to dive. I signed up for the dive classes and need to get my doctor to sign off on me to dive.

The problem is that I know that my general MD will probably sign-off without even giving it a second thought. I am thinking that the neurologist will do the same because I’m symptom free. I know some would just go for it after that, but guess I need an opinion from a MD that is a diver to know for sure. I'm trying to take the safe approach.

Is there anyone who is currently diving "post-labyrinthitis"?

Am I barred for life?

Thanks for your time and help,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

A single episode of viral labyrinthitis nearly two years ago that resolved completely and without residua would not generally be considered a contraindication to SCUBA.

If a GP and neurologist are willing to clear without reservation a diver with this history, there appears no compelling reason to seek the opinion of a specialist with knowledge of diving medicine.
