if you want diving "like it used to be" go to Mahahual, You will "rough it", its a panga ride not a dive boat, there is no phones, internet or cable TV and its "off the Grid" but with solar power and wind power and cistern water it is very passable for a quiet time. The Town is now down to aboout 200 people from 1200 before the storm. But there is not 2-5000 cruisers landing during the week. Maya Palms is owned by the folks that own the TERRE BONNE caverns dive in Missouri. 5 star it isn't but solid FRESH caught food, and a peaceful topside, with incredible diving below.....

Since its a little tougher to get there they have special rates, for both diving and lodging, call either Mx or Mo.

Having been down to Mahahual twice in the last two months, here is what's happening:
For the latest updates checkout Costa Maya - Mahahual - Majahual - After Hurricane Dean

At this time about 8 hotels are up and running. I would hardly call some of the hotels as "roughing it". Serveral do have internet availalble and TV's in the rooms (yes, even with solar power) While the town was hit hard, the area to the south is up and running. This area includes Maya Luna, Balumku and Margarita del Sol - all good quality hotels.

Dive sites to the south, starting about 5 km south of town are in very good shape with little damage. Even the area where the tours took pod people is still in good shape, and was never trashed as one poster commented.

There are 2 dive operators working - Dreatime and Bucanero del Caribe.

Mahahual is still a good place for a quiet time and some good diving.

I spoke with Maya Palms a week ago and they are also up and running..."Roughing it" : Means nostepping off a 40' boat with 17 others hitting the water for the perfunctionary 41 minute with 3 minute safety stop dive, the roads are not a 5 lane 100 kmph and 10,000 watt signage blasting thru your window at 3 am advertising the all you can eat buffet, and the latest version of Carlos and Senor Frog's restaurant....

Been there, done that.
Maya Palms is run by crooks...A must to avoid.

Dream time in Mahahual runs a good operation. If you stay at Maya Palms, sometimes they give you half price IF you pay cash, and IF the owners are not there.
