So, I was watching "Discoveries this Week" and the National Park Service is mapping the bottom of Lake Mead for future use by recreational divers, although it seemed a little deep for the everyday recreational diver. I have to say that the video footage was quite intriguing. It showed some of the structure that was from the time the dam was built. They also talked about some ancient aztec village that was underwater. Might be the dive of the future.

I wonder if a Mod would like to move this to Rocky Mountain?

Aztecs in Nevada? Long way from Mexcio city. How about Anazazi. perhaps? That's the Dine/Navaho name for the previous inhabitants of much of the area from whom they took the land when they migrated in - one translation: "Ancient Enemy."

Don, you are so correct on the name of the ancient civilisation. I did not even pick that up so apologies there and I think I need to make sure I read my posts when I post late at night, lol.

Either way a diveable ancient city is always one to put on the cards.

Onfloat was the show itself called "Discoveries this Week" or did it have a spercific title? As I was going to look it up and see if it is on TV here in Australia as it sounds quite interesting.

Yes the title "Discoveries this Week", it's a weekly show on Discovery.

It was after midnight here, when I wrote the post and I probably messed up the name of the tribe that was in the village. Still would like to dive it though.

I dove the lake in July. The water was wonderfully warm and a great relief from the 115 degrees outside. I expect to go boating on the lake again, but doubt I'll ever dive it again. The only difference between the scenery underwater and the scenery above water was the water. It was the same barren rock and scrub brush above and below. Of course, below there was also a layer of fine silt that had the most nasty feel when you touched it.

If I wanted to put it in Rocky Mountain, that's where I would have put it. I thought it was more realivant to basic discusions since it was a topic on a Discovery Channel show and I wanted more than just the people that live in the area.
Ok. Looks like one of geographic nature, but that's up to the Mods. Sometimes they move them, sometimes not. Doesn't look like it this time. :thumb:

No problem, just discussing. But then, I've toured many Anasazi ruins, learned a bit of their history. There is a town with a site on the New Mex-Colorado border misnamed Aztec, as evidently the anthropologists thought at one time that all ancient tribes were Aztec.

You will see Aztec influences in southern Arizona ruins. Must have been some trading. :crafty:

There are some good sites in Lake Mead and the Las Vegas area.

There is actually a bomber in the Lake but I am pretty sure you are not allowed to dive it, http://www.videoray.com/Video/video.htm .

Is the dive site in regards to dam structure the ( http://www.divelasvegas.com/divesites.htm ) the Batch plant dive site?

The Aztec village sounds a great dive.

Most of the good sites in Lake Mead are beyond recreational depths...for now. The B-29 currently sits at about 140-150 feet. It is in a restricted area. The NPS is still diving, searching, and researching it. Supposedly, there is a classified piece of equipment on it that they want to recover. From what I've heard, people have been sneak diving it and looting it. By the time it's taken off restriction there won't be much left. I don't think it's something that can be penetrated.

The Batch plant is above water now.

The Aztec village is probably under several feet of silt.

Lake Mead is over 100' below full level and just keeps dropping. Within a few years, we'll all be able to hike all of the sites if someone doesn't come in and restrict water usage in the area. Lots of housing going up and lots of HOAs that require lawns in the desert!

Lake Mead has a scuba park for training. It used to have a few "wrecks", but is now down to one due to the dropping water level. The other wrecks in the lake have been moved a few times to keep them underwater. Basically, it's following in the currents of Lake Powell - about 3 years ago they had to move one of the marinas at a cost of over 2 million dollars.
