What is the purpose of diving with a knife? I don't understand what it's used for.

I've seen a few different types out there and thought wouldn't that be dangerous to carry in the pocket of a BC. What are the chances of it slipping out of the sheth and poking a hole into the BC, sounds to me like trouble.

Knives have many purposes.

1) cuts fishing line or other entanglements.
2) those with metal hilts make great attention getters (banging on your tank)
3) in a pinch, if you are on the bottom in a severe current, you can use it to pull yourself back to the ascent line & get the heck outta there
4) prying scallops or abalone off the rocks. Also good for opening oysters (the aforementioned only where legal, of course)

Frankly, one in the pocket of a BC is kind of hard to get at when you need it. Most often they're mounted where they are easily reached.

I have to admit it's usually #2 for me... best way to someone's attention u/w.

See this thread about why you need a knife (or shears):

Dive knifes and shears should be kept in a holder. Personally I don't like keeping then in or on the BC for the reason you mentioned. I keep mine strapped to my leg. I is easy to get to, far away from my BC and doesn;t clutter up the chest area any more than it already is.

Thanks for the information so far and sorry didn't see the other thread on this. :(

I can certainly now see after reading the other posts and one in reply to this a diving knife is definatly something you don't want to be without, esp in a local lake with fishing lines. YIKES!!!

The original poster posted a simple question on the "New 2 Scuba" area. Pretty insensitive of you to jump all over him.

By the way, what is "redunancy"?

I'll pop my 2psi in here and say that I carry a small knife. Its prety simple and effective for most applications, especially since its blunt tip. Sooner or later I'll get one of the other knives or shears for differnet apps, but I like to keep things simple. :)

I agree on keeping things simple and carrying a small knife, however I will admit the others I've seen out there are tempting.. :) I think as a newbie to this sport I'm going to stay with something small and work my way up.

I carry two -- one full sized "dive tool" on my leg and the other smaller knife mounted to my BCD. I've been in situations where I could not reach one or the other and when I'm with students in open water I have a third folding stainless steel in my BCD pocket I can hand to someone to carry. I feel naked diving without one.
