Is diving insurance necessary or will my Blue Cross Blue Sheild PPO cover any thing that could happen.

Thanks Greenone

The long time experienced divers I have met recommend additional coverage. My cousin took a hit and his health insurance only covered about $3,000 of a $10,000 hospital bill.
Insurance through DAN is very inexpensive and worth every penny if you need to use them.

Double up, it's cheap. Med bill aren't.

Get the DAN insurance. Too many exclusions and limits in regular insurance, get a great magazine, and support an essential part of Scuba.

I bought the DAN insurance. A few reasons. By having it, I'm almost assured I won't need it (kind of a Murphy's Law thing). If I do need it, it'll be worth having. It doesn't cost all that much and gives me some piece of mind.

I think you can tell by now, that most all divers carry dive insurance. (At least the smart ones) Your medical insurance simply does not cover you if something happens. You now have a choice as well. Dan & PADI offer it.

I carry the top of the line policy from DAN. Any gas, any depth and it is only $99 per year. It is one of the most inexpensive pieces of gear you will buy and most needed in case you need it.

I have seen DAN at work on two people I know. DAN was easy for them to work with and they did 100% of what they said they would do. I wouldn't dive without it!

This came up on another forum on this board. I researched the differences between several policy providers. I decided to go with PADI over Dan. I will paste that post here:

>>I double checked the policy differences. The PADI Gold plan costs $67 p/yr. To get the same coverage with DAN the cost is $99 (premium plan + $29 annual membership fee). The $99 rate will get you a higher total coverage limitation but based on my research of most likely scenarios the price increase was not worth it.

Comparing apples to apples....for $67 with PADI compared to the $64 plan with DAN you get p/incident coverage rather than lifetime coverage, you get higher dollar coverage for trip cancellation and extra accomodations, you get medical non-dive coverage, and a few other items.

Bottom line you need to pay $99 with DAN to get virtually the same coverage with PADI's $67 plan.

having done the research and having that same health insurance you have listed above. from what im reading in the legalize of my policy is that im not covered under my policy the moment i go on compressed gas and go diving. the main problem with this is that is not clear in how its written in the policy.

to make things worse is that i have called them several times to get a clear explination and there not consistant, so i have written the medical director that over sees the texas area to get a written explination so that if i ever need to use it i will have it.

my reccomendation would contact them and get what ever they say in writting because insurance companies are very good at denial or denying anything that will make them pay for something.
