I would like to know what the groups feeling is about area dive operations in the Fort Myers area. I will doing a conference in Sanibel Harbour Resort in May. But, I want to dive too. So who would you recommend???
Thanks

He lives in Ft. Myers and when I was down there last summer and met him, he assured me there was NO diving from Ft. Myers. He usually goes across to the Atlantic Side to dive, or up to the springs I think.

A very nice fellow by the way, he'll probably reply if he sees your post.

The thing about Ft. Myers is the Gulf is very shallow and all sand. I understand you need to go 20 miles or so off shore to get to water of any real depth....

Hope this is a help.

I have experience diving that area of Florida. For years I had an Aunt and cousin that lived in Punta Gorda & Port Charlette. I loved going down that way. But I found off of Boca Grande there is some nice diving. Also off of Venice and Naples beaches you can find some coral. Boca Grande you can just pull up and Dive by the old pier but the other two you should consult a dive shop first for best beaches to dive from, etc. etc... But frank is right about the depth. I never got below 20-22 ft. at all. Boca Grande is my favorite spot in that area to dive.

Tom,

I think you misunderstood me. There is excellent diving for more advanced divers, but it is a haul.

Boca Grande diving has changed. Condo have been built by the old phosphate docks. You now have to enter at the public beach and swim over (unless you have a boat).

I enjoy diving the Gulf.

If you care to drive north to Venice (approx. 45 minutes), there's several locations that are good for shark's teeth.

I dove Venice Beach on Sunday, Water temp was 76, vis 40"-50" (yes, inches), max depth 18'.

Better than a day above sea level, though, and I got to work on my navigation some.

4 feet of viz aint bad in Venice. Last time I was there it was 5 inches. I'll be back on Saturday. Temps are also 15 degrees warmer than last month. Things are looking up!

I remember when that Island was small with just the rich living there. Now they have condo's? We used to park in one of the driveways and just unload to the beach. They would even let us use their water and hoses to clean the gear. I guess things have changed...that used to be a quaint little island.

These are high priced condos. This is still an island of wealthy people. I'm old enough to remember before the rich bought it up.
