With the recent lifting of SARS restriction and the possible availablity of cheap air fares, I was toying with the idea of heading to Taiwan for a diving trip.

If you have dived there, can you share your experience and recommendations ?

I should be landing in Taipei and wouldn't mind staying in motel.

Thanks

Well, Let's just say Taiwan is not known for great Dive Site. BUT there are 2 islands off the Taiwan Coast is quite good. 1. Green Island 2. Orchid Island. they are both on the southeast side of Taiwan. You will most likely be looking at 1 hr flight and 1 hr boat ride. It is typhoon season so watch the weather reports. Here is one dive shop I know who operate in that area, but I never dove with them b4 so I can't tell you how good they are. TUNG LUN DIVE SHOP +886 89 672010. I heard they can speak some english that might help out right? Good diving!

Thanks for the lead.

I can manage some simple mandarin, but not much reading them , especially the traditional character.

Only worry is the diving briefing, if I can translate all the terms into what I can understand. Never mind, I am sure I can handle that

Is there a web site that I can refer to ?

Also, when is the monsoon season in TW ?

Cheers

Hi Snoopy:

You are most welcome. Sorry for the insuffient info. Good luck to you diving in Taiwan and where are you located anyways?

Dear Snoopy

Welcom to Taiwan!!
I also live in Taiwan, and been to Green Island twice.
Green Island is famous by its clean water,
the viz is always over 20 even 50 meters.
Variety of coral and fish make Green Island's underwater world beautiful.
And due to close to Taiwan island, the cost of food is cheaper than Orchid Island located south from Green Island.

You could contact Water World to arrange your trip,
but just as jc928tw said, pay attention to the Typhoon report.
Cause Typhoon is on the way to Taiwan today.

If you are not go to Green Island,
the north east coast of Taiwa is another great option.
It's close to Taipei, and we do shore diving there almost every weekend.
It not so good as Green Island, viz is always around 5~10 meters.
But you could find some place have different beauty to Green Island.
Due to the current and make some point have beautiful coral.
And since we don't have time and money to go diving in Green Island every week,
Diving in North East Coast near Taipei make us can go diving and back to sweet home at night.

Hope you will enjoy your trip to Taiwan.
if you have any question don't hesitate to ask me.

Hi Steponwind, I think I post a report on your thread of Puerto Galera a week ago. Well, I think you will have a blast there. The food is better than I expected (except tropicana; Portofino is quite good, try their BLT sandwich) There are even lots of Korean food around. Tell them to take you o the Canyons since I think that is the best dive site there. Although I only did 7 dives. Good luck to you and maybe we will hook up sometime and dive in Taiwan.

Thanks for the hint.

I was looking at teh cost of Green Island diving. May not be worth the cost & effort for just a weekend dive.

It's close to Taipei, and we do shore diving there almost every weekend.

Where is this place ? How many dives would be possible over the weekends with you guys ?

Yes, I will want to dive and then take a long walk down those night markets and eat my way from street front to street end. Those variety of street food is just unbelivable.

Will you PM me your email address ?

Thanks

Hi Snoopy

My e-mail address is steponwind@giga.net.tw
Normally we do 2 dives a day in the morning,
and recently my friends and I only dive one day in the weekend.
take off around AM6:30 and reach North-East Coast around AM8:00.
Start diving around AM8:30~9:00 and end around PM1:00.
Then take a lunch together then back to Taipei around PM15:00.

If you want to dive in North-East Coast please contact me,
you can dive with me,
may be I can arrange that weekend have two diving day.
but please be notice, the weather condition in North-East Coast will be not good for diving in Sep., so you'd better come in Aug.

North-East Coast is like its name, the north east part of Taiwan.
From Keelung to Ilan, the coast is beautiful and we all learn diving there.
There's no legal diving boat, so we all do the shore diving,
some good diving spot is because it really hard to reach,
so all the marine lives are well preserved.
Hard to reach means you have to carry your gear walk for 100~300 meters or clime a small hill.

If you are intrested in this, contact me by e-mail.
Thanks and best regards.
