I have to spend the next few weeks in Taiwan (Kao Shuing). I know Taiwan is not normally a big dive destination bt I was wondering if it is reasonable easy to rent tanks and lead and dive in the south part of the island on the weekend for a non-resident. Any suggestions would be appreciated or advice if I am out of my mind. Anthing to avoid sitting and watching endless CNN/BBC in the hotel.

Thanks in advance.

I believe there's diving in Kenting ... on the south tip of the island. Sure looked like it when I was there some years back ...

yes, you can try Kenting, a very famous holiday destination in Taiwan. there are many direct bus from Kaoshuing to kenting, it will take 2.5 hrs to there. The diving price in Kenting: 1 Shore dive with tank and dive guide-500NTD to 600NTD , 2 tanks Boat diving with dive guide-1800NTD to 2000NTD. rent a full set diving gear may cost you 1000NTD for 1 day. There is only one thing you must take care, fewer local dive guide can speak English well, you have better to go there with your Taiwanese friends, or someone can speak Chinese.

Or there is always the 1 hour flight to Okinawa and great beach and boat diving.

Or you can take boat to Green Island or Orchid Island. These two offer you the best diving experience you can get in Taiwan. There are many good dive sites in Green Island. You can get to see a 1200-year-old coral reef, four iron bones man-made reefs which looks like four tall buildings underwater, and many piles of telegraph-pole man-made reefs.

For Orchid Island, the best part is the ship wreck. If you get lucky to see this wreck in good visibility. It's a breath taking view.

Below is the layout of the ship wreck. The star sign is good for taking pictures. Numbers are the depths.

Thanks for all the info guys. I may try to make it down to Kenting based soley on being a reasonable distance from Kaohshiung. I love the pics from green Island, just to hard for a non-Chinese speaking person to get there from here in the small amount of free time I have.

For Kenting, I think you can this boat Called Ci jian (or Chi jian). I think their boat is the best in that area and the service as well.

It's not a good idea to visit Orchid island now, no ferry boat, only 19 seats do-228 can get there(depending on weather condition). It's a good idea to visit Green Island in winter, no typhone, fewer people there, good visibilty. I went diving last week in Kenting, cool water (24C-26C), poor visibility recently, (5-10m, sometimes below 5m) worse than last year.
