...and the highest elevation I could find through Google for Amtrak was 7400' in the Donner Pass, compared to 6229' for Lake Tahoe - approximately 1171' gain in elevation. I would check with Amtrak though directly - they should be able to provide you with that information.

The tracks are not that high in elevation, that might be the mountain, but not the tracks nor the freeway, also Heavenly is right on the lake, you can see the horrible scares in the forest from the north shore, furthermore, northstar is not too much higher than the lake, maybe 1000'. Homewood is across the street from the lake.
