No experience needed and it feels great!

I reommend giving sport chalet a call. We have shops all over southern california, three in san diego. There are dive boats we charter going out every weekend if you like the boat thing. You can go on trips to the point loma kelp forest or do something a bit more advanced like the YUKON in wreck alley ( I recommend that you have wreck and deep diving experience for this). A really great dive boat to check out is the Lois Ann, they have an awesome crew. For beach dives, the easiest in san diego is la jolla shores. THe canyon there offers everything for beginners and experienced divers. I saw 5 octopus, a 1 foot long horn shark, and a huge sheephead there on Sunday. Its a pretty easy sandy beach entry so long as the surf isn't up. Call the local dive shops if you need a guide. Let me know if you need more info, SD is my turf and I love to share stories.

Second the recommendation for the Lois Ann. Great crew, air & nitrox on board, fat fills if you want 'em. Yukon blew my mind (okay, the narcosis helped too). Am returning there April 22 with a group from our shop in Oregon. Definitely not for beginners. Kelp forests off Point Loma are a must--depths about 50-60 feet. Loisann.com has descriptions of the dive sites.

The Sheraton on Harbor Island (a short walk from the airport) is nice but not particularly close to any diving. They have a decent gym.

The Bahia Resort is very close to where the Lois Ann is docked. Hotel Circle is 10 minutes away and has dozens of options.

I hear good things about the Lois Ann as well although I've never been on her.
