My wife and myself are both PADI instructors planning a work and travel trip to Mozambique and would welcome any info from divers or instructors that have been and dived-worked out there!

Any info would be excellent!

Thanks Uri

I too am planning a trip to Mozambique at the end of this year. I am looking at spending some time in the Barra/Tofu area as well as Vilankulos and Bazaruto island. I was wondering if any of you have experience with some of the dive operators in any of those areas. We will be driving around, and because of this opted not to go to Punto d Ouro because one would need a 4x4 to get there.

Thanks,
heidi

Most of the dive operators in Ponta do Ouro have border transfer 4x4's to get divers from the South African border post to Ponta.

Do a search on the Africa/Middle East forum - I have posted links to operator's web sites before.

I used to live in Mozambique and run a resort there for 6 years. Diving is awesome.!

Lots of Dive Centres in Inhambane look for Divemastrers/Instructors for short period of time.

Try Barra Reef Lodge, Barra Lodge or Indigo Bay , Vilanculos BEach Lodge, Dugong Lodge

Good Luck

Would really recommend Tofo, lived there for 2 months recently.
Stunning diving.
I've dived all over the world and Manta Reef in Tofo is in my top 5 dive sites.
There's 2 dive shops there, i 'd go for Diversity Scuba. Tofo Scuba is the other one, both are good and professional.
There's a good road in and out of Tofo, so there's no need for a 4 wheel drive, but the road to Barra is horrible, you could get by without a 4 wheel drive but you'd be risking the health of your car.

Hey Darren,

I see you've dived Kenya as well. Do you know what Watamu is like? Worth it for a few days? I'm thinking of a few days there, then a week or so on Pemba, and then safari in Kenya. If Kenya's not worth it I could fly into Dar instead of Mombasa, and do safari in Tanzania......? I'm open to suggestions. Another dive location that won't cost me scads of money to get to and stay at after Pemba perhaps?

I actually lived in Watamu for a month or so working on a turtle conservation project.
Did a few dives, which were good (loads of life) but it was the start of their season (September), so the whale sharks and mantas weren't around. But apparently at the right time of the year you've got a decent chance of diving with both (Much better chance in Tofo though).
I dived with Aqua Ventures, http://www.diveinkenya.com/ and i'd recomment them, very professional and safe.
But i think Pemba and Zanzibar have better diving, and i had a better safari in Tanzania (Serengeti) than in Kenya (Masai Mara).
Hope that helps ... if you've got any more questions please feel free to ask, i love talking/thinking about Africa as i sit behind a computer in an office in NYC !!
