The wife and I are headed to beautiful Maui in February, what is the water temp on average there? Would our 3 mm shorties be sufficient, we were in Myrtle Beach in August and were fine with them there, actually we probably could have gotten away with skins. Also, anyone know good shore diving spots for novices there?

Scottyd,
Maui is great in Feb. ... dove with 3mm full (protection is good and could get cool after muli-dives) ... but I recomend you ask the locals .... drop down to
Hawai'i O'hana .
Before you do you may consider filling out your profile more so others will "know you better". Alot of great novice shore dives and if you want a guide, PM me and I'll get you names that I have no problem recomending.

A full 3mm is the most common wetsuit. 5mm for wusses like me. The water temp will be around 76F.

As to shore dives, there are lots of good spots in both West Maui and South Maui. Those are the two most popular tourist areas, and are about 45 minutes to 1 hour apart so it would help to know where you intend on staying.

Kidspot is a local that does a lot of diving with visitors. He's in Lahaina (West Maui).
I'll be in Kihei (West Maui) Jan-March and often dive with visitors. Give a shout out a couple weeks ahead and I'm sure you can set up some dives with some people on whichever side of the island you are staying.

You can plan on water temps being in the low 70's that time of year - so plan accordingly. You will see divers in everything from swim trunks to 7mil suits around here.

Have a great trip and drop me a PM when it gets closer to your visit - maybe we can do some diving together.

Aloha, Tim

Thanks for the info, looks like there are lots of places to go, kidspot, i will drop you a pm as time come closer,

We dive Maui at least once a year and I never wear less than a 5mm full. In the winter, my husband wears his 3mm full with a 3mm vest layered under it. If I weren't repetitive diving (we dive every morning), a 3mm full would likely be fine. YMMV

I might go with a full 3mm for protection against anything you might need protection against and to keep you warm. I freeze in a 75 degree pool with a 3mm shorty on; just something to think about...
