I did a quick search on SB and Yahoo and did not find much on diving in Bar Harbor Maine. Anybody have experience diving in that area? I know Eastport is popular of course but I am curious to learn about Bar Harbor specifically.

Thanks

I haven't done any dives in Bar Harbor, but I did my AOW dives in Bass Harbor, which is also on Mount Desert Island. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see much other than sand, urchins, and a big moon snail. The water temp was in the low 40s, which was pretty good for March.

i dive off deer isle often (about 10 miles to the west)
many many small islands and coves to dive.
tons of fish/lobster/scallop/anemone. in the summer there are usually seals, but they seemed to have moved on.
right now (last weekend) the water temp was in the 50s.
visibility generally is tuff, there is a ton of stuff floating around, like diving in a blizzard

Soggy:
What is this Bar Harbor you speak of? Perhaps you have mispelled it and are referring to Bah Hahbah, Maine? :)

Ha ha ha, yeah that may have helped. I grew up in Maine so I try to be a good ambassador with correct spellings and everything (ha ha).

I was curious if there were some wrecks or charter outfits to contact for some decent dives.

Thanks for the information. I found that website as well. They do not appear to offer regular charter services for diving.

My wife and I were up there 2 weeks ago snorkelling and we got to see a lot just doing that. Of 12 "dives" the highlights were probably:
Lamoine beach, down past the state park
Little Hunter beach in Acadia on the Park Loop Road
Bernard Beach
In the Schoodic section of Acadia: Pond Island, I think it was the first turnout
In the Schoodic section of Acadia: Out to Rolling island and back.

Different combinations including starfish 6"plus in many colors, sand dollars 2" snails, lobster, sea urchins, small fish (Seems like the big ones stay more to the open water, I see plenty in the shallows off York county) Jellyfish. Lots of neat kelp and rock formations and a bunch of stuff I like but am not bright enough to know the names of.

Red tide was rolling off a few weeks ago so it should be getting nice about now.

We poked around and didn't see too much diving going on. Surface tems were around 54 at Schoodinc to 60 at Deer island.

Pete
