PADI always refrences the benfits of staying fit and helathy for diving, but always in a rather oblique manner, they never go into the facts and suggestions I love so much (I'm a geek for facts), so I figured I'd ask here.
I like to fetch balls, chase other dogs, etc.
My understanding is that PADI recommends staying fit not necessarily to be a better diver, but to prevent medical emergencies while diving. Complications that are survivable on land (in civilization) can be fatal underwater, or even on a boat far out at sea.
As for becoming a better diver, I think you'll see the most benefit from similar activities, like swimming. Some people like freediving but I figure if I'm already out there, I'd rather be diving. Hiking can probably help a lot if you do a lot of shore diving with longish hikes.
