Chris, go count something! I suggest you do some sort of statistical analysis. You will not need to extract any species for this. Go dive and measure sea urchins (or snails, anemones, etc.) in a kelp forest habitat, then take the same measurements in an inter-tidal area. You can statistically analyze the kelp forest habitat vs. the inter-tidal area to determine which the species prefer. This is just an idea. Get as creative as you want. I am a Marine Science Major as CSUMB. I would love to discuss more of your research analysis if you wish. Just send me a PM. Good luck!
 
I really like this idea because we have some non divers in our group and this way they would still be able to participate in data collection.
