Exhaling through the mask help to prevent eye squeeze and some ear squeezing. You just hear the bubbles louder. But it does dry and fog your mask more. I purposely do that once in a while.
 
This should be done regularly to remind you how to clear your mask, let a little water in, clean the lense with the water, hold your hand and push in the upper mask, exhale strongly in the mask, and blow the water out under the nose. This will pressurize your mask and sometime opens your ear.
