I was wondering if there are any Diving Concept owners here that have a custom Duraflex/Ultraflex drysuit w/o the telescoping torso? I called the manufacturer and they suggest that you really don't need it because the suit is built totally custom to my body. Doesn't the telescoping torso help in donning the suit off and on? Also, how about bending over at the torso? Seems like without the torso, the suit would get really tight at the shoulders. The company offers the suit made with the telescoping torso at no extra charge, but they recommend against it for the reason of unnecessary material flopping around. What are your experiences with this design? Also, they only offer a one year warranty, is this something I should be concerned about? I can get the suit at my LDS for about 300 dollars less than a custom DUI CLX450. I am still undecided, because one year warranty sounds really short for diving equipment. Thanks for any replys. :eyebrow:

Yeah, I would just get the DUI. They know what they are doing with the telescoping torso. I got a signature series (Full custom) clx-450 a few years ago, and it fits me fine...

I just "retired" my custom DC Ultraflex Pro (after more than 700 dives). Mine was a really good fit, and I didn't have any problems getting into or out of it. My flexibility was not at all limited by the suit ... although to be honest I'm not all that flexible even in sweats and a t-shirt.

The only problem with the design of the suit is that you can stress the zipper at the shoulder end if you're not careful getting into and out of it ... and that tends to cause leaks due to the zipper pull wearing into the fabric on either side of the zipper teeth. Once you start to leak there, it's the kiss of death and you'll end up replacing the zipper. I wore out three zippers on my suit ... the last one's leaking pretty good now.

All that said, it was a great suit ... I'm rough on gear and this one took a real beating and held up pretty well.

I have the FifthD version of the Ultraflex. There is no telescopic torso. You can see how it fits here:

This is a custom suit and it fits great. It is easier to get in and out of than my 350 TLS (I use that on for cave diving) due to the design of the zipper. I can also reach my valves easier, although I don't really have a problem in mu TLS. There is a little bit more material in the back (covered by my backplate), but it is not excessive. It's not tight in the shoulders. It is a snug fit as that is what you really want so as to not allow gas to be trapped. Telescopic torsos that are excessive can trap gas. My DUI is so snug I barely have any telescoping left. Maybe 1 inch at best.

The DC custom was about $200 more than the stock suit with telescopic torso when I got mine. That included both bellows pockets. That was last September and the price was $1400 stock and $1600 custom at FifthD. I believe the prices have increased dramatically recently from all the reports I'm hearing. My price was quoted directly from Andrew Georgitsis while he measured me. He even told me to pass this number around.

The only thing I dislike about the suit is DCs ability to put the cuff dump in the correct location. It is a little inconsistent. It's not bad, but it does make it harder to dump than my DUI suit with a shoulder dump. If I had to do it all over again, I would just opt for the shoulder dump.

DUI has a seven year warranty unless you get something like a cave cut. Funny thing is DUI recently replaced my zipper at no cost beyond the one year warranty it came with. They also act very quickly to remedy any problems.

Thanks for sharing your photos. Looks like a really nice fit on that suit. Isn't the Ultraflex basically the same suit as the DUI TLS 350? Why is your DUI suit for caving and not this one? Just wondering what the difference was.

The DC has a little heavier material. It's not quite the same. The seams are taped on the DC and a DUI is only uses aqua seal. Look at them closely if you can sometime. I'm busy this weekend, but if you pm me and remind me, I could take some pictures of the way the two suits seams are different and put them on the site as well.

I use my DUI in cave country because I like the fit and if David Rhea sees me in a DC he may take away my Cave 2 card ;) David is a DUI rep.

Dan, I noticed you have some options on your suit. Did you have the heavy duty zipper put on? I noticed that you don't have the "warm neck" option, is that something that is nice to have versus need to have? Did you chose those pockets over the zippered design because of being more streamlined or because of capacity? In your opinion, is this suit better made than the TLS? I dive mainly in cold waters of the north coast, so that was why I was asking about the neck warmer option. Sorry about grilling you about your new suit, but it seems like there aren't many DC owners. :11:

The new version of the Ultraflex (or FifthD 1000) is fairly new. In the past, most people I have heard from didn't care for DC because they were so ill fitting. AG has spent over a year working with them to develop this particular suit and it is far superior to their older suits when it comes to how they were fit.

I do have the HD zipper. AG recommended it when we put the suit together.

My neck doesn't get that cold, or it really just doesn't bother me, so the standard latex seal is ok with me. They do have an optional colar for the undergarments that helps keep your neck warm. AG has one of those because he is a bit of a wimp when it comes to cold water ;) Yes, the DC undergarments are great. Are they as warm as the DUI 400 g Thinsulate? Probably not when they get wet. Unless you are doing extreme dives, I don't think you have to worry about flooding the suit and freezing during deco. Otherwise they are plenty warm. They are form fitting and don't ride up on the legs and arms when you don a snug fitting suit. They are easier to reach the valves. Some people have real problems when they don't get a good fitting set of DUI Thinsulate. Fit is very important.

I don't recall zippered pockets being an option, but if you do a search or ask about it in a DIR forum, you will understand why they don't recommend this. Velcro is so much safer. You can always get it open. The FifthD bellows pockets are huge. I don't think you will find pockets bigger than these. Pockets on the side are out of the slipstream, so the size isn't critical. One neat thing about the bellows pockets are the velcro strip that runs along the sides that can keep the pocket flat like a utility pocket when it is not in use or not full.

My opinion is I like both suits. The DC is probably going to be a little more durable and definitely costs less up front. However, DC undergarments may cost more depending on what type you get. Time will tell. I have only had mine since late last September or early October. I can't remember exactly when it came, but it has been about 6 or 7 months. No signs of wear on it so far and I usually average around 100 - 120 dives per year. A few of those have been in the DUI, so I would guess I have around 35 to 40 dives on it so far. The DUI is a little slicker in the water. That could also be the fact that you probably won't find a snugger suit (one that fits) on anyone than my 350TLS. I should post some pics of that sometime so people can see what a nearly perfect fit is.

One thing I like about the DC is the tapped seals. My DUI has had big problems with the wrist seals coming unglued. DUI finally mounted them on the inside and that has helped. I just think taping is not a detriment and adds protection.

There are a few owners around the Midwest and the number is growing. If you see Brando on the list (BCS I think) ask him how he likes it. He is the model on the FifthD site.

I would contact AG for really specific info on the suit. I know a fair amount, but like they say, no one understands something like the person who engineered it. He played a huge role in the new suit. He could provide much more detail than I can. Feel free to ask me more if you think of anything. If I don't know the answer, I know where to get it.
