Hi:
The baja diving is located mainly in 3 places:

1) La Paz. Many great sites, best season late summer early fall, as said already. Many dive shops, Pm me if you want some more tips on any dive service in particular, I have worked with almost every LDS over there. Good city, (it is the state capital) different than Cabo, still (as said already) great places to eat & stay. The islands near there are beautiful. The diving is usually 2 o 3 tanks per day, the boat ride is one hour at least but the chance to see pelagics ans sharks is good! The dive at the island with the sea lions is an experience you have to see. Mantas, hammerheads, whale sharks, sea lions, etc etc

2) Cabo Pulmo. National Park. 13 years without fishing or anchoring on the reef, you can tell. Big pelagics around, lots of mantas, whale sharks, sharks (I saw 2 sharks there snorkeling in 2ft of water, amazing). There some resorts to stay, some comfortable some pretty rustic, no electricity in town, only solar or generated locally, a couple of good LDS and overall GREAT experience. You can drive from Cabo is a 2 hour ride, the road is not dangerous, Baja is pretty friendly with tourists. The boat rides to the dive sites are 10 minutes from shore.. good food around if you want shrimp, fish etc etc,

3) Loreto. This area of the peninsule below the Sierra de La Giganta mountains has the most amazing landscapes. It is also a National Park protected, the diving is very good similar to La Paz, maybe less dive sites but enough to make a week of diving and no repeating dive sites. Good LDS and a very relaxed ambient. It is a village way bigger than Pulmo but way smaller than La Paz, very good places to eat&stay.

Any questions, PM me. I will be glad to help

I'm working on a couple of sites about the natural history of the region - just some bare bones stuff so far, but much more on the way. http://www.seabaja.com has some dive info, and the marine life info section of http://www.seasancarlos.com has some info that works for Baja as well. It's hard to beat the central and southern gulf. Mulege and Loretto are both wonderful areas with good diving, and La Paz and Cabo Pulmo are just fantastic. Good Luck!

Considering driving down to Bahia de los Angeles next winter. Towing a boat and bringing a compressor. Is there anything different in that area since the Susan Speck book was published?

We'd be camping and diving the off-shore islands Coronado and/or Angel de la Guardia.

I second "bikefox's" recommendation for La Paz. La Paz is a very laid back city that was a true pleasure to visit. Here is a link to info on our '06 trip there if you want to see some pictures. You can also do a search on Cantamar (a dive resort outside of La Paz) on Scubaboard and will find quite a few threads on the area. Late summer through the end of OCT is when the water is warmest.

The sea of Cortez is very windy this time of year and is hard to get a trip out. June to Feb. Is your best bet on Diving the Islands in the sea of Cortez. It is a nice time to visit because its a lot cooler in winter so instead of 100 to 115 degrees its 75 to 80.

It would have helped if I had included the link that I referred in my previous posting. Most have been one too many glasses of wine that night.

Hi all. Just wanted to add my $0.02 worth and another option for diving in the Baja.
I work for Sea of Cortez Diving based in San Felipe. We run a 6-day liveaboard, the Andrea Lynn, in the northern Midriff Islands (including Bay of Los Angeles mentioned above) from April through August. In August to November we run out of Ensenada to Isla Guadalupe and then from November to January we run trips out of San Carlos in Magdelena Bay. We just ended our second year and are taking Jan through March off (it's the cold windy season in the Sea of Cortez). Please feel free to email me for more information, elena@seaofcortezdiving.com.
