What is the plan, experience level of the divers? When will we be

Plan is to meet at 7:30 go over hand signals and safety...gear up and be in the water at about 8:00 I imagine the dive will last about 60 minutes or so.

I'm only doing one dive, but the others might be doing more.

Hope you can make it

Hey all,

I have this coming Friday off from work and would like to get some diving in. If anyone is interested in diving this Friday, please post here or PM me. I'd be up for diving anywhere from Laguna to Malibu.

Also, if anyone is interested in diving on Saturday, let me know. Again, I'd be up for diving from Laguna to Malibu. Marineland is always a great place to dive. Just let me know.

Thanks,
Phil

I keep hearing great things about Old Marineland, but have yet to see for myself.

I see that you've pulled together some diving for tomorrow, but let me know if you (or anyone else for that matter) is interested in Marineland Saturday morning. I'd love to meet up and get a couple dives in.

Thanks,
Adam

7:30am at crescent bay N entrance it is.
OK, I am looking at a Frank's map of Greater Laguna Beach and I see Crescent Bay and Crescent Bay Point Park which is at the end of Crescent St. Is that the place?

One other problem I have. Is there a shop in that area which will be open early enough to get a tank and weights? I brought all my gear except tank and weights and the shops around here have already closed. I didnt think I was going to be able to dive tomorrow so I didnt try to get anything earlier in the day.

If any of you have suggestions, please PM me with a number and I will call you.

Thanks,

Willie

Launga Sea Sports is very close, but they do not open until 10am. I would like to do a second dive and I believe turbo][ is also up for a second. You could grab the tank and weights and meet us for our second, your first dive of the day, if you want. I don't live near Oceanside, so am not familiar with any shops near you. Here are 2 shops I found that may rent gear.
Adventures In Diving
(760) 470-2831 225 Brooks St
Oceanside, CA
Underwater Schools Of America
(760) 722-7826 Web Site 225 Brooks St

You're welcome to join us if you can make it. And as for experience, the dive site is easy and most of us,if not all, are just recreational divers.

Yeah I am doing a 2nd, just bringing one tank (100cuft HP). We should be able to get a fill at Laguna Sea sports by the end of our 45mins - 1hr SI.

It's claiming back to the car that's going to hurt :P

It was great to meet 5 SoCal scubaboarders this morning. I had to wait for Laguna Sea Sports to open to get a tank and weights, but I met at 7:30am for introductions and watched them head out for the first dive.

Took a long time to get the gear and fills during their SI. Turbo ][, TeqP & I got headed down to the beach for their second dive around 1130am I guess. They were excellent and patient hosts.

I had forgotten to dip my tank band in water before tightening and it came loose on the trip out through the surf. Johnny tried without success to tighten it in the surf. Then I got knocked down and we headed to the beach where I took my BC off and we were able to tighten it up.

This was my first Pacific dive and my first surf entry. After the flub and the surface swim, I was pretty winded. Took a short breather and we headed down with Phil in the lead.

I was very impressed, enjoyed the dive a bunch. Vis varied from 10-15'. Never managed to kick Johnny's reg loose dispite a couple of inadvertent attempts. :) Lots of stars and sea urchins, several lobsters and assorted fish. Just about time to turn the dive, we were treated with a sea lion show. It was nice dive.

I managed to get knocked down coming out as well and lost one fin momentarily. Quite a long trek in dive gear back to the car for this old man.

Thanks again guys for sharing your time. I got some good pictures and some video as well. I will post them later tonight.

I already have 2 tanks for tomorrow. See you then.

Willie,
It was nice meeting and diving with you. You got the names, mixed up though. Phil (TeqP) was leading the dive and Johnny (Turbo][) was able to keep his reg in his mouth :D.
The viz wasn't the best, but the sea lions definitely made up for it. That was my first time diving around sooo many sea lions. I'd say there were about 15 of them darting in and out. Very cool. Can't wait to see the video. Glad you had a good time.

Rain run off advisor posted.

Also from Rashguard.org

Abalone Cove Beach

Water Quality Warning!
Due to likely polluted runoff in the surf zone.
(last updated 4/14/2006 9:00 PM)

Polluted Runoff Status: Warning!
Runoff report from: 4/14/2006 9:00 PM.
There has been recent heavy rainfall which means it is likely that there are high levels of polluted runoff in the surf zone. Raw sewage may also be in the surf zone after heavy rains. Water contact's not recommended, especially near rivermouths, lagoon openings, and flowing stormdrains, for 72 hours after the end of the rain event.
Last rain was on: 4/14/2006 9:00 PM.

Abalone Beach is east of Old Marineland....

So what's the call?

I'm still VERY new to California.

I checked out the link you posted, and it seems to indicate that there're warnings, but no closures.

Does this add up to diving tomorrow being a very bad idea, or just not the greatest idea ever?

Should we call this off? Should we show up and see how conditions seem? Is there even a way of seeing for ourselves what the water quality in this particular spot is?

Maybe it's too late already, but if anyone has any answers I'd love to hear them. I've got SO much to learn. :06:

Thanks,

Adam
