HYPOTHYROIDISM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question:
I have recently discovered that I have an underactive thyroid and have been prescribed thyroxine. I have only been taking this 3 weeks and am gradually increasing my dosage. I am currently taking 150 mcg and may have to increase to 200 mcg next week. I am due to go on holiday at the end of November and plan to do some diving. Will this in any way effect my ability to dive?

Answer:
Unless the substitutive hormonal treatment you have been prescribed causes you adverse effects, such as cardiological disturbances, agitation or the like ( but this would be a sign of overdosage and your physician would promptly correct it), there are no known contraindications to diving under a thyroxine treatment.

Any research or info on diving with hypothyroidism?
I have an underactive thyroid and take 125mg thyroxine daily. The problems I have diving are that I feel the cold quicker than other divers and get tired quicker. I am euthyroid at the moment and still get these symptoms. I have just been diagnosed with very mild thyroid eye disease which only required drops to keep them moist and havent done any diving all winter so havent asked the Dr yet if it will affect my diving. My dosage took over a year to get right if you go over just reducing the dosage can take a while to have an effect on your body. It isnt an instant fix like taking a pain killer, you have to build up slowly as going over active can be bad for your heart.
