Honestly, I think the risk is pretty managable. Water is really really good at at stopping radiation, and most of the heavy gamma emitters would have decayed already. With effective decon I thinknit could be done safely.

With the pipe sticking out of the wall like that, and the horizontal lines behind it, it looks like you are a tiny little diver working next to a swimming pool hand rail. Weird perspective that I can't unsee!
