Well, I've completed my open water dives and am now open water certified so I have discovered a question I had not thought to ask the instructor.

On your divers log you have a count for the dive number, so for example the first open water dive is dive #1 and so on.

After the 4 dives for open water do you number the next one 5 or 1? I also assume you carry the bottom time over as well?

As a pilot I relate many things in diving to things in flying and I think I'm making the logging more complex than it needs to be because this isn't flying, so I just want to be sure about it.

Most of the divers I know count training dives as well. There are a few agencies (GUE at least) that do not count training dives in their course structure (they require renewals of certifications unlike other agencies) I'm not sure if IANTD does that for some of their courses or not as well.

Personally I don't think it matters much - if I have to count training dives to add up to 20 dives per year (or whatever low number it is) I figure I'm not diving enough anyway ;) - So I do count them, but not for credit, just for the sake of simplicity...

Aloha, Tim

btw - welcome to Scubaboard :D

Well, the dive log is for you more than anyone else.

I numbered mine 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, etc...

I don't add up bottom time.

Hope this helps.

Just make sure you have at least 3 dives every 90 days for currency in the category of water you’ll be diving, and note whether the dives are retractable gear or taildragger for insurance purposes. :D

LOL , and make sure to have at least one night dive & surface in the last 30 days

I loged any ocean training dives that were longer than 20 minutes , so basically , all my ocean dives (as was stated , It's more for your own personal info. I am thinking of logging my Rescue traning dive even though it was not 20 min. , just for the conditions ... Vis. about 2' or so , some stress there)

I instruct for SSI and you start counting them in open water. So if you've done 5 open water dives with your class your next dive without the instructor is dive number 6.

Five. You need to remember the point of your log is to look back at the dives you made for later reference. Just because it was in class doesn't mean it didn't count. And honestly I find that my training/class dives end up having a lot of useful information because I write about the drills and exercises we did.

Some people do but I don't bother. If it ever comes up the software I use will tally it up.

You probably are. You just need more practice, so you should go diving a whole lot more so you have plenty of dives to practice logging. ;)

Yeah, a dive is a dive is a dive. I log most everything unless it's ridiculously short or I helped a boat captain get his keys at the slip, etc.

15 feet (or more) or 15 minutes (or more) makes it a dive, training or not, and it gets counted. I don't count pool sessions unless something "interesting" occured, but otherwise a training dive is a still a dive.

I don't carry bottom times over unless I'm in a situation where I have a residual nitrogen load to be concerned about.

I count the training dives, but mark them in my log book with a TR next to them, just for reference purposes. I keep a running total of my bottom time as some (not many) dive operations like to see that more than they do dive numbers. So it's just another thing I keep track of.

J.
